Why do people compare it to Manor Lords?

It is the name demo reviewers reached for more often than any other game. One demo reviewer on Steam put it plainly: “this is Manor Lords, western frontier style.” (From the demo's Steam review summary)

The comparison also runs the other way. Some negative demo reviews called it a Manor Lords reskin, and a Steam forum thread titled “Similar to Manor Lords?” split between “It’s a settlement builder, so kinda” and players who thought it looked like a reskin. What does Wild West Pioneers do differently?

From its own store page, these are the parts the comparison leaves out:

A story. Beneath the building there is a personal thread: your father never returned, and you set out to find him and keep a promise you made.
Scouts. You send scouts to discover new locations and chart a course west; see scouts and expeditions.
More than one settlement. The Early Access build has a world map that links several settlements across distinct regions.
Wishes and Whims. Once basic needs are met, households want things of their own: pets, instruments, amenities. The team calls these Whims.

Which other city builders does it get compared to?

Banished. Named by several demo reviewers, both as a match (“like Banished or Manor Lords in the Wild West”) and as proof it adds little.
Farthest Frontier. In creator titles by RonEmpire and Raptor, and cited by a demo reviewer who hoped it would merge that game with Red Dead Redemption.
Frostpunk. A German demo reviewer likened its multiple settlement sites to Frostpunk’s, and an English one felt Frostpunk and Manor Lords do the same mechanics better.
Aztecs: The Last Sun. The publisher announced it on this game’s Steam page as another survival city builder of its own. (Announced in Steam announcement: Aztecs: The Last Sun started into Early Access!)
Wild West Dynasty. A separate game. Its development-blog videos sit on the same publisher’s YouTube channel, and they turn up in YouTube searches for this game.
